Within the North York Moors National Park, in a sheltered wooded valley close to the magnificent ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, these spacious, comfortable and well equipped holiday cottages stand in a landscaped courtyard, close to the owners’ farmhouse. Guests can enjoy farmhouse breakfasts in the conservatory at Laskill Grange, while across the drive at Laskill Country House, the owners’ daughter offers home cooked evening meals or ready prepared frozen meals to enjoy in the comfort of your holiday cottage. Visitors can wander the 70 acres of beautifully tended grounds or relax in the shared terrace garden with its small lake and river frontage. The views over the surrounding countryside are superb, and there is excellent walking from the doorstep. Long distance footpaths along this area’s Heritage Coastline, and the Cleveland Way, offer perfect terrain for walkers and cyclists. The Ryedale Folk Museum at popular Hutton-Le-Hole, and the ruins of Rosedale Abbey are both worth a visit. For a day out, the North York Moors Railway runs steam train journeys between Grosmont and Pickering. Whitby, is easily reached, with miles of sandy beaches and an ancient abbey overlooking its harbour. Scarborough, and the coastal villages of Staithes, Runswick Bay and Sandsend are all within 20 miles. Horse racing at Thirsk, Wetherby and York, 25 miles. Closer to home, Helmsley has Duncombe Park and a castle. Shop 2 miles, pub 6 miles.

Situated at Staithes, near Whitby, these former World War I army bunkers are in an idyllic position close to the countryside and sea. Four of the barracks have been ingeniously and tastefully transformed to provide good quality accommodation retaining much rustic character and charm. The remaining four lodges retain their near original condition as a visual reminder of their former function. Situated just off the Cleveland Way, there are many fine moorland and cliff top walks. There is a golf course and driving range in Brotton, 6¾ miles away, and at Scaling Reservoir, 7¼ miles, there is sailing and fishing. There is a leisure centre 2 miles down the road and a 2-minute stroll down the cobbled street brings you to the centre of the picturesque fishing village with its small harbour nestling beneath rugged cliffs. Step back in time and walk the quaint narrow passages, as Captain James Cook himself must have done. Here in Staithes there are village shops, pubs, cafés and a restaurant, and in 2020 the village was featured on the BBC programme ’Gone Christmas Fishing’ with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer. Why not travel on Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express (the North Yorkshire Moors Railway) through ’Heartbeat’ country, or visit Whitby and its famous abbey which is 11 miles away.

Tucked away in the peaceful village of Felixkirk, this cosy, dog-friendly holiday cottage adjoins the owner’s home and provides a very comfortable rural retreat on the very edge of the North York Moors National Park, near Thirsk. This brick-built, single-storey cottage is a hidden gem offering a very private stay whilst enjoying an enviable position near to the award-winning, dog-friendly pub and is 5 minutes by car from the nearby market town of Thirsk. It has been completely renovated internally in December 2019 and externally over the summer of 2020.
The cottage offers beautifully presented accommodation for two guests and their pets. There is a small double bedroom with under-bed storage. There is extensive garden space outside the cottage with stunning views, which is also fully fenced to allow your pets to wander in a contained area. Access to a larger field is also provided. Car parking for two cars is available next to the cottage, which is at the end of a private tarmac and gravelled driveway. There is also separate secure storage available for bicycles.
The owners are keen walkers, runners and cyclists and can advise of lovely local and regional routes and provide local dog-friendly walk guides for your use. From the doorstep, there are numerous footpaths and cycling trails and the renowned, traditional, dog-friendly village inn serves local produce just minutes from the cottage. The village is home to a 4x4 driving centre which offers action-packed days with off-road driver training and quad biking, and at Sutton Bank, visitors can take a trial lesson at the Yorkshire Gliding Club and visit the nearby famous White Horse near Kilburn. Thirsk, 3 miles away, is a quaint market town famous for its connections with James Herriot, the well-known vet and author of ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. Thirsk is also home to a well-known racecourse and 15th century church.
Days out can be enjoyed at Rievaulx Abbey near the wonderful town of Helmsley, as well as Castle Howard and Fountains Abbey. Board the steam train at Pickering to be transported through the stunning North York Moors to the coastal port of Whitby and explore the fishing villages at Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes. The North Yorkshire Moors and also the Yorkshire Dales are easily accessible by car and the historic walled city of York is only 25 miles away, with its iconic minster, exquisite architecture, museums and art galleries, and is not to be missed when visiting Yorkshire. Close to the village of Goathland, Ivy Cottage is a luxurious, large, semi-detached cottage with fabulous views of the surrounding countryside. The original building dates back to the 1800s and has been renovated to a high standard with a modern décor. The kitchen/dining room has a real social feel, and is ideal for sitting down to a meal with all the family. The living room offers a warming multi-fuel burner, perfect for relaxing in front of after a day of exploration, and the study/games room is stocked with books, board games and a games console for a bit of family fun. The garden room key aspect is the opening of the 3x bi-folding doors onto large decked areas for an amazing outside living experience. The ground floor bedroom and en-suite wet room is ideal for less mobile guests and also has 3x bi-folding doors out onto the decked areas with views over spacious gardens and the North York Moors Railway. Three more bedrooms can be found on the first floor, one offering en-suite facilities, as well as a large family bathroom.

Ivy Cottage is situated just outside the hamlet of Beck Hole, one of Yorkshire’s best kept secrets, and just outside the village of Goathland from the ’Heartbeat’ TV show fame. This stunning cottage is just a short walk from one of the smallest pubs in the UK, known for its traditional ales and warm friendly welcome. Stunning valleys and sweeping hillside views can be enjoyed from this idyllic location as can the many cycle tracks, bridle paths and walkways all from the doorstep.

Nearby Whitby is increasingly popular with holidaymakers all year round as it has something to offer all the family, including 3 miles of golden sandy beach, donkey rides and ice creams. Climb the 199 steps to the gothic Whitby Abbey, which was made famous by Bram Stoker’s ’Dracula’, or take a stroll along the cobbled streets taking in some of the older parts of town with its jet stone boutiques. Whitby has an up and coming foody scene too, with everything from Michelin star restaurants and award-winning fish and chips, to tea rooms and family friendly pubs, many of which are dog friendly. There is also a golf course nearby and many boats offering tourist trips out to sea in search of seals, dolphins and even minke whales in the right season.

The Yorkshire Heritage Coast is dotted with hidden gems such as Staithes and Runswick Bay to the north, and Robin Hood’s Bay to the south. Robin Hood’s Bay can be reached along the Cinder Track walk and cycle way, and the Cleveland Way also makes its way along the tops of cliffs and into some of the bays, offering superb photo opportunities along its path. The North York Moors National Park is right on the doorstep, with its hundreds of walking routes which take in the Falling Foss Waterfall and The Moors National Park Centre. Beach 9 miles. Pheasant Lodge, refurbished in 2018 is a single-storey, detached lodge set at the bottom of a steep hill in a quiet part of the picturesque fishing village of Staithes in the North York Moors National Park. With a small enclosed courtyard and an open-plan living space as well as private parking, Pheasant Lodge is the perfect base in which to relax after a day of exploring this fantastic coastal area. Staithes Beck runs alongside the site with its own waterfall and wildlife.

This charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is considered something of an artist’s dream, and even has its own popular Art and Heritage Festival along with regular workshops and artisan displays. The pretty houses and cottages dotted around the old harbour are surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, and a sheltered sandy beach is set amongst the rocky coastline. Steeped in history, Captain Cook served his apprenticeship in Staithes, and there are many old buildings to admire and a museum to take you back in time.
Modern day Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to a RNLI lifeboat station, and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) land their catch of fish, crab and lobster. There are also boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and whale watching available. An ’Illusion Trail’ guides visitors around the network of backstreets and alleyways. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the seashore. The Cleveland Way stretches its way along this dramatic coastline and is a firm favourite with walkers as it drops into many hidden bays and coves such as Robin Hood’s Bay and Saltburn-by-the-Sea.
The wonderful town of Whitby is just 10 miles away with its regular events and festivals including the Goth Weekend, a regatta and regular live music events to complement its many fabulous restaurants and bars, tea rooms and delis. Try climbing the 199 steps up to the abbey and St Mary’s Church from where you can take in the breathtaking views down into the town and out to sea.

Head inland to enjoy a myriad of walking and cycling routes that the National Park has to offer, enjoy a warm welcome in one of the many village inns dotted across the moors, or take it easy on board a steam train journey into the heart of this beautiful part of the world. Surf enthusiasts will enjoy Saltburn-by-the-Sea with its numerous surf schools and there are plenty of courses for the golfers. Alternatively, just sit back and relax and enjoy the peace and tranquillity around Pheasant Lodge. Beach ½ mile. Shop 500 yards, pub and restaurant 700 yards.

For those who love the open countryside, long walks and nature, The Barn is the perfect spot to stay. Set within the North York Moors National Park and on a working sheep farm, it has everything for the great outdoors fanatic. The owners, who live adjacent, have renovated the old hay barn and have thought of everything, even down to dogs having their own private doggy shower room, so you can wash them off after a long walk in the beautiful countryside.

This detached property has been designed to make the most of the wonderful views across the dale, with large panoramic windows which leave you mesmerised by the view. All the bedrooms have private en-suite bath or shower rooms, and are decorated and furnished to a very good standard. The living room has a cosy wood burner and French doors leading out to the enclosed garden and patio area, and there is also a galleried reading area overlooking the living room. The master bedroom on the first floor once again captures the stunning views of the open countryside.

The Barn is ideally placed to visit the east coast of Yorkshire, with Scarborough, Whitby and Filey all just a short drive away. Scarborough is the nearest resort, with its long Marine Drive that takes you from North Bay to South Bay, passing the castle perched on the clifftop. The two bays are very contrasting, but one thing they both have in common is that they both have an excellent sandy beach. Scarborough has lots to offer, from excellent restaurants, shopping, a waterpark with a large wave pool and outdoor infinity pool, and of course the cricket festival.

The North York Moors National Park is also home to the Dalby Forest, with over 8,000 acres of woodland to explore and plenty of cycle and walking trails for all abilities. The Dalby Forest mountain biking track has hosted the world cup, so you will find some challenging runs there. It is also the home of the Go Ape adventure park, which is great for the children.

Within the hour you can be in the medieval city of York, with its picturesque streets and historic buildings. The city is voted every year as being one of the top 10 cities to visit. There are street entertainers, independent shops and cafes to enjoy, as well as museums and theatres.
